12 tips I wish I had prior to travelling for the first time
Hey you! So you've decided to start travelling, is that right? I am so excited to be on this journey with you. Let me start by saying I was in your exact situation in 2015. Back then there was no such thing as a travel blog, or instagram influencer. I had no information about what I was getting myself into. So the fact that you're finding this is already a step in the right direction.
I want to let you know my first ever solo travel experience was a disaster. Mainly because I had no idea what I was getting myself into but partly because of not having the knowledge I do now, which natural came from experience. I want to share my experiences with you so you too can have the same knowledge even before you've taken to the skies.
Now, there are definitely things I wish I knew before I decided to book a round the world ticket and leave with no savings, but I am here to tell you what I now know. I am going to be honest, most of the research I did when I was planning my trip was focused around money rather then what I should be expecting once I arrive in my destinations.
I was caught up in the hype of it all that I didn't realise how much I need to consider when travelling and if I have done enough to prepare myself physically and mentally for the trips I take.
I had never travelled alone before and only been internationally once but I was so committed to proving everyone else wrong that I didn't even question what I was doing until I landed in LA. I was 18 when I left Sydney for my first solo trip. Arrived in LA at 6am, had no idea where or what I was doing, had hardly any savings and for some reason decided to get the transit bus from the airport to downtown LA which was where my airbnb the next 6 days was. Already 4 mistakes there but anyway I still powered on... I got to my airbnb and that's when it all hit me. I started panicking and eventually that lead to my first ever panic attack. I didn't know what else to do but to call home and get a one way flight from LAX to Sydney. I lasted about 10 hours. It was the best and worst thing that I still debate with every so often.
I never want people who are travelling for the first time to experience what I did, this is partly the reason for my blog. I know I can't tell you everything i've learned in 12 points but you have to start somewhere right? My 12 top tips for new travellers
